2014 Burgundy Offer
2014: “The vintage fights back.”
A mild winter led to a promising spring where temperatures were stable; flowering was quick and even. A hot June broke on the 28th, bringing a third consecutive year of hail damage to the Côte d’Or. The Côte de Beaune was harder hit than the Côte de Nuits.
Fortunately, rot did not overtake hail-affected vineyards. Temperature was the cause of tumult. Mediocre weather in July and early August, including sporadic rainfall, slowed down the ripening process and required vigilance against potential vine maladies. Thankfully mid-August marked a turning point with miraculously warm, dry, days through to harvest. September had significantly more hours of sunshine than normal.
Overall, 2014 is a lively, ripe and harmonious vintage. Whites are classic and “the most consistenly fine for a generation. They are pure and fresh, balanced and beautiful.” (Jasper Morris MW). Reds are immediately pleasurable while built for sound longevity. “2014 is a delicious midweight vintage with alluring fruit, juicy supporting acidity, expressive terrior character, supple tannins and considerable early appeal.” (Stephen Tanzer).
Founded in 1731 Bouchard Père & Fils is the largest domaine in the Cote d’Or. Its 321 acres of vineyards include 185 acres of Premier Cru and 30 acres of Grand Cru. Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the most consistent and well regarded producers in Burgundy. They take a quality-at-whatever-the-price approach in the vineyard and cellar.
There is no greater name in Chablis today than William Fèvre. Yes, there are two other producers whose wines achieve the same across the board, chart shattering ratings each vintage, François Raveneau and Vincent Dauvissat, but the availability and relatively approachable pricing for the quality of the Fèvre wines is remarkable. In the words of influential wine critic Robert M. Parker Domaine William Fèvre is “by far the most important estate in Chablis… it dominates the marketplace for top-end Chablis.”
