This tiny Santa Ynez winery, the sister property to Napa Valley’s cult winery Screaming Eagle, has been quietly producing some of the best and most exciting wines in California. When the Jonata Ranch was first surveyed by one of France’s most renowned wine experts, Frédéric Engerer of the famous Château Latour, he suggested planting asparagus; this was not what the owners wanted to hear. Unimpressed they thanked him and promptly set about to create something unique.
Today Jonata is an 80 acre vineyard planted with 10 different grape types all of which do exceptionally well. It’s a vineyard that has every single shoot and grape cluster manicured. The property is farmed with all aspects of organics and biodynamics in mind and is fully diversified; a vegetable garden, livestock, chickens and even hops for beer. Lastly Jonata has a brilliant young winemaker, Matt Dees, well-appointed with a degree in soil science, an experimental and gregarious personality by nature, Matt truly is a “salt (or soil) of the earth” winemaker. Employing cutting edge viticulture Matt receives 150 different lots of grapes, vinifying each one separately before artfully blending them into the finished wines.
With a commitment to Syrah and Cabernet in particular, these impeccably crafted, chiseled masterpieces of tannic structure and true varietal characteristic have inspired a devoted following. Jonata has garnered favorable notice from the world’s foremost critics year after year:
“Since Jonata’s debut releases a few years ago, this has been one of the most impressive newcomers in the Santa Barbara region…”
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate 2010
“… this is one of California’s most exciting new wineries. What they are accomplishing with Bordeaux varietals is mind-boggling…”
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate 2008

|La Tierra de Jonata 2008, Santa Ynez – Vintages Classics||221150||$89.00|
|Wine Advocate: 92 The 2008 Tierra is predominantly Sangiovese, with the addition of 6% Syrah, which the estate uses to give the wine a little more mid-palate density, not a bad thing in a cooler year like 2008. Sweet wild cherries, leather, licorice and tobacco are woven together beautifully in this generous, inviting wine. The French oak (40% new) is a little prominent at this stage, but this is nevertheless a lovely effort. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.Find Stores|
